Blog 3: Interview Preparation

1. Who do you plan to interview? Why?

  • I plan on interviewing my mentor, Jack K, who works up at Cal Poly in the engineering building. I chose him because he is very involved in a couple of the competitions similar to and including the Solar Cup. He is extremely knowledgeable and always gives me good facts.
2.  You have to ask 5 questions. What additional questions do you plan to ask?

  • Why do you think the Solar Cup is a good competition to be a part of?
  • How did you end up in your profession?
  • What kinds of success have some of your teams had in these competitions?
  • What is the most important part of making a successful solar powered canoe?

Blog 2: Topic Choice

a. For my Senior project I will be competing in the Solar Cup which is basically a series of races for solar powered canoes that each team builds themselves. It's a huge 3-day event that is extremely competitive and overall just challenging. I've actually wanted to do it since freshman year when i saw the other seniors working on it because I've always loved the idea renewable energies and making it into something competitive seemed too perfect for me.

b.
  • Effective I-Poly Citizen: Throughout my project I plan to demonstrate being an I-poly citizen by showing up on time consistently and finishing all my service learning hours as required. I also plan to show respect to others by treating everyone equally and helping any of my peers when I can. I also plan to remain involved with all school activities, and if I can I would like to win some kind of award in the solar cup to represent all the great things we do at I-Poly.
  • Effective Learner: In my project I will also exhibit my own personal creativity while still being relevant to my topic. I will also do my best to remain a proficient student and turn in all my assignments consistently and on time. In addition, I would like to apply all the things we learn in class and in my mentorship to the real world.
  • Effective Communicator: To be an effective communicator I think it is always important to listen to any ideas that my peers have to offer. This way I can accomplish things in better ways than I might have done by myself. Plus, whenever people get to voice their opinions they seem to get along more and it results in less problems for the group.
  • Effective User of Technology: As an effective user of technology I plan to use all of my available resources from both I-Poly and Cal poly to further my research. If I need to I will ask my teachers for accessing any resources they might have that can help me; especially considering my topic. In addition, I plan on making sure that I check the blog and my email constantly so that I don't miss any assignments either. Not to mention using all of our new technology to create better multimedia presentations throughout the year as well.

Blog 1: Summer Mentorship

Literal:

  •      For most of the Summer I was with my family working in Utah and while I was out there I wasn't able to contact Miss Melogno for help finding service learning, and I couldn't find anything out there that actually pertained to my topic. There wasn't any places that worked with solar power where I was. So, I decided to wait until I got back to California to do my mentorship. Ms. Melogno actually found a great mentor for me who works with Cal Poly, his name is Jack K. (562) 274-5750. He works with the Cal Poly solar cup team and is very knowledgeable about the competition. The only problem was that I was only here for the last two weeks of summer and we were only able to meet once during that time, so I only got 5 hours of my mentorship done.
Interpretive:

  •     I think we require mentorship as part of the senior project because it is always great to learn things from someone, with a lot of experience. When we work with someone who does these things for a living we get a lot of good advice and a different perspective on our project topic. Plus, if we have an expert available throughout the school year we are able to ask for help with any problems that we have with our presentations or anything like that. In the case that you are looking for a career pertaining to your senior topic you can even ask your mentor in depth questions about how to get a career in that field.
Applied:

  •      Right now I am simply trying to schedule another workshop with Jack, to try and get more hours and some more information about my senior topic that will hopefully help me build the solar canoe in the best way possible. If I can I would also like to find another mentor as well, just to get more opinions or some tips that Jack might not know about.
