Blog 15: Independent Component 2 Approval

For my Independent Component 2 I plan to expand on the work I do with my independent component 1. My first independent component is the first 18 experiments of a book the Mrs. Pittman recommended for me along with the first of two electronic component kits. It is titled "Make Electronics" by Charles Platt. So my second independent component will be building on what I learn from the first electronic kit and consists of 16 more electronic related experiments that seem to get more complex and challenging as I go on. All of these experiments build on each other so that you have to transfer the different skills learned in order to have success with the next thing. Therefore, I have to complete each and every experiment and make sure I understand it completely. This way it continues to challenge me and is expected to take me at least 30 hours to complete all of these projects correctly.

Blog 11: Mentorship 10 Hours Check

1. I am doing my mentorship at Glendora High School

2. My contact is Steve Crisci (626) 221-2607

3. I currently have 10 and a half hours done.

4. The majority of my time spent there has been working with this apparatus that we designed to test out how long we can get the batteries to run and at what amperage. I'm actually really happy with this as a project for me since it is very closely tied in to my essential question and allows me to really focus on the marathon race more than anything. However, I have also spent a decent amount of time working with the rest of the boat and will probably doing a lot more soon since the boat is to be inspected on April 17th.

5. Done.

Blog 4: Project Reflection & Working EQ

1. So far I have been able to understand a lot about my topic and have researched a lot of information.

2. My interviews, and just the time I spent with Jack Kobayashi have helped me to get grasp on my senior topic in general and have really help me develop a large foundation of knowledge just waiting to be built upon.

3. So far one of the things that has worked is just creating a basis of understanding on my senior project along with knowledge about my EQ.

4. The one thing that really hasn't worked for me, is getting the hours of service learning that I need. However, I'm hopefully going to turn that around soon.

5. I really just wanted to get a good experience out of my topic this year, even though that isn't quite what's happening, mostly due to errors on my part. The only thing that I really look forward to getting done at this point is basically just getting more mentorship hours and hopefully getting to contribute what I can to Walnut High School's Solar boat with the knowledge I have gained throughout this time. I also still plan on talking to the captain of Cal Poly's solar boat team and Professor Herder who is one of their advisors, in order to get my third and fourth interviews.

Blog 16: 2-Hour Meeting Answer 2

1. What is most essential in winning the marathon race of the solar cup competition?

2. Choosing the correct motor and battery combination for the canoe.

3. - Certain motors will have a higher efficiency and be better geared towards the marathon race.
- Only specific batteries will be able to put out the right amount of power for the full 90 minutes without failing and still hold a charge. All while meeting the specifications placed by the rules.
- If your motor and batteries do not compliment each other or work well together as much as possible than it will be harder to have success in the competition.

4. The following 2 articles helped me reach this answer along with some of the advice from my mentor Jack Kobayashi:

"Choosing a Motor and Gearing Combination." - Northwestern Mechatronics Wiki. N.p., 4 Jan. 2007. Web. 02 Nov. 2012. <http://hades.mech.northwestern.edu/index.php/Choosing_a_Motor_and_Gearing_Combination>.

"Lead-based Batteries." Information รข€“ Battery University. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2013. <http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/lead_based_batteries>

5. I plan on just studying how much these two things really affect each other, along with finding any other factors that could contribute to problems with a solar boat.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

1. For my independent component one I plan on doing 30 hours of mentorship at Walnut High school with their solar cup team that I am trying to get in contact with. Hopefully this will help me to further build on what I know from my research and allow my to get hands on experience that relates to my senior project and hopefully helps me understand more about my essential question.

2. This will reach 30 hours because it is just a simple extra 30 hours of mentorship that I can log on a spreadsheet and can easily be kept track of.

3. The way this would relate to my essential question is just that it helps me too get  more familiar with the actual competition by somewhat participating in the building of the boat. That way I can see what actually is essential in winning a marathon race of the solar boat competition and how different teams prepare and what they do to have success in the race. This experience would help verify my answers or at least allow me to see what might have to change in my answers.

Blog 19: Senior Project and ESLR's

1. What ESLR have you excelled at the most in your senior project? I think the only ESLR i have really excelled in this year would be the Effective I-poly citizen.

2. The reason I chose this ESLR is because even though I haven't really been on top of things myself; I have always been one to help my peers or the school as much as I possibly can. I'm always respectful to anyone I work with in general and realize the importance of a person taking responsibility for their actions.

3. I know this section is used to show evidence of an ESLR by showing something that we have created. However, considering my senior project, some of the best evidence I can use is my lack of work to demonstrate. I have been falling behind in my own project, but am now paying for my bad decisions in the work I have to make up. I am taking full responsibility for this and doing things that will hopefully get me back on track as soon as possible.
